We’re not sure of the exact date yet, but this month BBC4 will broadcast a new documentary about the British synth-pop explosion.
According to a Beeb press release, Synth Britannia looks at how artists like Cabaret Voltaire, The Human League and Throbbing Gristle were inspired by Kraftwerk and JG Ballard "to dream of the sound of the future against the backdrop of bleak, high-rise Britain."
The doc takes in Gary Numan’s 1979 appearance on Top Of The Pops, and the bands like Depeche Mode, Ultravox and Soft Cell who took synth-pop to its commercial zenith before it was updated and usurped by the coming era of electronic dance music.
Contributors to Synth Britannia include Philip Oakey, Vince Clarke, Martin Gore, Bernard Sumner, Gary Numan and Neil Tennant. Check the trailer:
