Roska’s ‘Proverbs’ single from last year saw the UK Funky producer take his cues from Detroit techno with a twilight-hued night drive of a track, and it’s an aesthetic he works with again here under his Bakongo (sadly no longer Uncle Bakongo, it seems) alias on the latest release from Ramp Recordings sister label Brainmath.
The drums are still tribal, but in amongst ‘Amhara’’s reverberating melody and floaty, celestial synth-lines they take on a more futuristic quality. It’s more tracky than ‘Proverbs’, and not quite as smooth, but that’s no bad thing: it still packs plenty of punch. I’m never sure whether you can ever really justify seven quid for a one-sided single, but Bakongo doesn’t have it easy in the recession-hit jungle, so at least it’s for a good cause.
