Six new additions to the line-up of Godspeed You! Black Emperor‘s ATP Nightmare Before Christmas have been announced, most notable among them being Tony Conrad.

Born in New Hampshire in 1940, Conrad is an important and compelling figure in terms of the 20th century’s musical avant-garde. The violinist/composer was an early member of the Theatre of Eternal Music (AKA The Dream Syndicate), working with John Cale, La Monte Young, Angus MacLise et al on groundbreaking drone improvisations; Cale and Lou Reed named The Velvet Underground after a book they found when moving into Conrad’s old apartment (Conrad, Cale and Reed played together, along with sculptor Walter de Maria, in a pre-VU band dubbed The Primitives).

Conrad was also part of an early Rhys Chatham ensemble, and in 1972 he collaborated with krautrockers Faust on the minimalist classic Outside the Dream Syndicate; more recently he’s worked with the likes of Jim O’Rourke and Throbbing Gristle’s Genesis P. Orridge. But his achievements are by no means restricted to music: his 1966 film The Flicker was part of the much-vaunted “structural film” movement, and his subsequent video and performance art has been exhibited at such prestigious institutions as MoMA and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

We’re not sure what to expect from Conrad’s performance at ATP, which is billed as ‘Hanged with Tony Conrad’, but make no mistake: it will be an event.

Cult New York avant-rockers Oneida plan to bring “the impetus, spirit and community of The Ocropolis” to the UK festival. What’s The Ocropolis? It’s the band’s multidisciplinary studio/performance space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, which was built in 2005 and has housed recording sessions for Black Dice, Growing and Psychic Ills, among others. According to a press release, Oneida will host a full day of improvisation, collaboration and recording with several special guests.

Improv saxophonist and expert manipulator of resonant spaces John Butcher has also signed up for the Nightmare Before Christmas, along with Touch-affiliated turntable hauntologist Philip Jeck, plus The Oh Sees, Matana Roberts and Land of Kush. The full line-up so far is as follows:
