Michael Larsen, best known as underground hip-hop fav and legendary battle rapper Eyedea, has died.

Part of the duo Eyedea and Abilities, Larsen was an infamous freestyler, winning the 1999 Scribble Jam tournament. Away from the cipher, his recorded raps – often as half of the duo Eyedea and Abilities, or under the alias Oliver Hart – were just as well received, released on labels like Rhymesayers and anticon.

His mother, Kathy Averill, posted on the rapper’s Facebook page yesterday that “it is with great pain and sadness that I tell you my son Mikey (Eyedea) has passed away. At this time we kindly request your respect and our privacy as we process this devastating loss. On behalf of Mikey’s family, close friends and fans, thank you.”
