John Foxx & The Maths – ‘Interplay’ (analogue video mix)

Jonathan Barnbook has created a new video for the superb title track from John Foxx & The MathsInterplay album.

The short, beatless song – which finds Foxxy in reflective, world-weary but still bitingly romantic mode – is one of the highlights of Interplay, a collaboration between synth-pop pioneer Foxx and analogue maestro Benge. After co-founding and leading Ultravox through their early – and by far most vital – period, Foxx went solo helped re-write the rulebook for pop and electronic music with his shattering 1980 album Metamatic, and over the past 30 years has continued to evolve as an artist across a rage of media, collaborating with the likes of Harold Budd, Robin Guthrie, Anne Clark and LFO along the way. Interplay finds him returning to the minimalist but nonetheless sumptuous and story-driven synth-pop with which he made his name.

Esteemed graphic designer and typographer Jonathan Barnbrook has previously worked with the likes of David Bowie and Damien Hirst. His video treatment for ‘Interplay’ is the kind of cathode ray psychedelia that James Ferraro and Oneohtrix Point Never dream about.
