Download: Starving Weirdos – ‘In Our Way’

It’s probably – no, definitely – too early to be talking about the best records of 2012, but we’ll be damned if Starving Weirdos’ Land Lines isn’t in with a shout when we attend to such business in 11 months’  time.

Starving Weirdos isn’t a name that’ll be familiar to many of you. It’s the prolific Humboldt County duo of Brian Pyle (Ensemble Economique) and Merrick McKinlay, and their music is a strange and intoxicating brew of drone, dub, Middle Eastern and astral jazz influences. Previous releases have hinted at greatness, but it really comes together on Land Lines, which was born out of improv sessions last year. For these recordings, Pyle and McKinlay were joined by a number of guest musicians, including Amiee Hennessey, whose vocal contributions can be heard on the opening track from the album, ‘In Our Way’.

To tell you the truth, ‘In Our Way’ isn’t the best thing on the album, but it is a marvellous scene-setter, and a decent enough entry-point for the uninitiated. Download it above, and be sure to check Land Lines when it drops on Amish Records in January 2012.
