In Talking Heads’ 1979 single ‘Life During Wartime’, David Byrne sung “this ain’t no Mudd Clubb / no CBGBs”.

Fast-forward to October 2006, and CBGB – the legendary New York venue that played host to early gigs from The Ramones, The Cramps and countless more – ceased to become a club, after closing its doors for the last time with a farewell concert from Patti Smith. Now, however, CBGBs is back… but it’s still not a club. It’s a festival.

CBGB the festival will take place from July 4-8 this year, with film and conference elements featuring as well as music. No line-up has been announced at this point and the festival is still calling on bands to apply to play. It does, however, claim to expect between 500,000 and a million people to attend.
