The highlight from Martyn’s 2011 LP Ghost People has been given a somewhat tardy mix by LuckyMe affiliate Claude Speeed – and it’s a prime example of better late than never.

‘We Are You In The Future’ closed out Martyn’s sophomore album, and a thrilling finish it was too. A nine minute epic carried by dusky hardcore drums and Carpenter-style synth patterns, it’s an absolute peach; this scribe has heard more than one person rhapsodise about it as album closer of the year, and with good reason.

Props to Speeed, then, for earmarking the track for the remix treatment. A member of (really rather good) math-rockers American Men, Speeed’s long held a place in FACT’s heart: his ‘No Drums’ tape from a few years back was a brilliant winter warmer of a mix, and he trumped it with 2012’s excellent classical/ambient/drone mix for Goodhood with Dominic Flannigan.

True to form, his Martyn remix is stately and spooky, extracting the occasional synth tone and leaving it to resonate through space. Things really pick up around the four minute mark, with Speeed making a sudden swerve into Ben Frost territory. The strange mix of forboding and weightlessness even reminds us a little of Laurel Halo’s majestic remix of Kuedo’s ‘Live, Work & Eat In Collapsing Space’, one of our ten favourite tracks of the year.
