Bandcamp launches social network for fans

The DIY music publishing service adds some long-awaited functionality.

Since 2008, Bandcamp has been an invaluable site for musicians wanting to share (and monetize) their music while side-stepping traditional distribution channels. But while fans have discovered and supported artists on Bandcamp through the years, they have been unable to perform simple functions that come standard on similar sites.

Late last week, Bandcamp announced a slate of improvements that find the site operating like a social network. Fans will be able to showcase their Bandcamp music collections, follow their favorite artists, explore the music of their contemporaries, add items to a wishlist, and more. The move comes at a time when Myspace has re-launched, looking to reclaim some of its former glory as the place to discover new music on the Internet.

For now, joining is limited to those who have ever made a purchase on Bandcamp. Head over to Bandcamp and sign-up now.
