"MIA VS THE SYSTEM": M.I.A. accuses Grammys of theft

M.I.A. has set her crosshair on the Grammys.

Last night, the singer took to Twitter to announce she was launching an online “steal log” to name and shame those appropriating her ideas: “IM KEEPING A STEAL LOG THIS YEAR HERE THE ONE FOR JAN / FEB > http://miauniverse.tumblr.com  MIA $500 : GRAMMYS $5000000″.

The first target is the Grammy Awards, who M.I.A. claims ripped off the lighting designs used in a solo show in Australia earlier this year. The alleged offence was committed during that faintly ghastly Rihanna/Bruno Mars/Sting tribute to Bob Marley at this year’s ceremony. M.I.A. has uploaded a pair of screengrabs comparing the two shows, both of which involve emerald neon boxes. According to M.I.A.: “My ideas came from my life. My set was based on Tamil Hindu temple. Not Bob Marley…If u wanna see the real thing or get it first, come to a M.I.A. show!”

If any of you dabble in copyright law, feel free to compare video of both concerts below. M.I.A has been working with Hit-Boy on material for her new album, Matangi. The record is expected in April. [via Pitchfork]
