Jay-Z launches Roc Nation sports and signs Yankees all-star Robinson Cano

The rap mogul expands his sports portfolio.

Jay-Z’s entertainment company has moved beyond artist management with its announcement of Roc Nation Sports, a “full-service sports management company” that will be partnered with Creative Artists Agency’s sports division.

“Because of my love of sports, it was a natural progression to form a company where we can help top athletes in various sports the same way we have been helping artists in the music industry for years,” says Jay-Z, who is also a minority owner in the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets.

Roc Nation Sports’ first signing is MLB all-star Robinson Cano, the second baseman for the New York Yankees. “At this point in my career, I am ready to take a more active role in my endeavors both on and off the field,” says Cano. Surely, Jay-Z will have more success than the last rapper to make the move to sports agent (trust us: click the link).

Update: Sources tell ESPN that Jay is planning to become a certified agent, “first in baseball and eventually in basketball and football.” However, representing basketball clients would cause him to give up his small stake in the Nets.

Meanwhile, Roc Nation’s core business has had a busy six months: signing Timbaland, Kylie Minogue, and Sander Van Doorn.
