Two people have died at New York’s Electric Zoo Festival, and the festival has cancelled today’s event (the last day of the three-day festival) due to “health risks”.
According to a statement from the New York government, two attendees – Jeffrey Russ, 24 and Olivia Rotondo, 20 – died during the festival’s first two days (August 30-31) while four others had become “critically ill”. The statement explains that while “definitive causes of death have not yet been determined, both appear to have involved the drug MDMA.”
“The founders of Electric Zoo send our deepest condolences to the families of the two people who passed away this weekend”, reads a statement from the festival organisers. “Because there is nothing more important to us than our patrons, we have decided in consultation with the New York City Parks Department that there will be no show today.”
