Afrobeat with a solid steel casing from the sprawl of Kinshasa.

There’s not much information about Mbongwana Star, a newly formed seven-piece band from the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, but their excellent debut single does most of the talking for them.

Fusing the clatter of Congolese rhythms with throbbing post-punk bass and electronics, ‘Malukayi’ develops the tradition of “congotronics” – music made with makeshift electrified versions of traditional instruments – into a bigger, dubbier sound that could easily translate to a darkened dance floor.

Metaphorically speaking, they’re “making magic out garbage”, says producer and band member, Doctor L – who also produced Tony Allen’s Black Voices.

The single is taken from the band’s debut album, out this May on World Circuit, and they’ll be on tour in France, Belgium and the Netherlands this April and May – see tour dates on their Facebook.
