Iggy Azalea’s Billboard Award for ‘Fancy’ pissed off a lot of hip-hop fans.

Beating Nicki Minaj and Bobby Shmurda in the Top Rap Song category, the Australian rapper’s Mustard-flavoured smash hit was not just an annoyingly catchy symptom of everything that’s wrong with mainstream hip-hop in 2015, oh no. It was also technically ineligible for nomination.

Over 21,000 people have signed a petition pointing out that nominations for the 2015 Billboard Awards had to be released between March 10, 2014 and the end of March 2015, but ‘Fancy’ came out on February 17, 2014 – almost a month before the stipulated time period.

“This is unfair to the other nominees in these category, especially to ‘Anaconda’ by Nicki Minaj, who most likely would’ve won,” the people behind the petition argue.

They certainly have a case, but the petition has already been shut down despite being only 3,000 away from its stated target. “A spokesperson for Dick Clark Productions, who produces the award show, has said that the award is still Iggy’s unfortunately,” the campaigners explained, although that doesn’t explain much. “Let’s make sure Nicki rightfully takes what’s hers home next year.”
