The Week’s Best Videos: CGI psychedelia, the G.O.O.D. life and a cinematic fairy tale

Welcome to FACT’s weekly video round-up.

As we note at the end of every year, music videos have never been better. But too often, music videos — along with documentaries, live sets and interview clips — get lost in the shuffle of news and new music.

With that in mind, FACT is doing what it does for mixes, mixtapes, vinyl and more: rounding up the internet’s best videos on a weekly basis. And to remove our bias, we won’t be including our own content — you’ll have to stay tuned to FACT TV for all your Against The Clock, FACT Freestyles and Confessions needs.

Kendrick Lamar
God Is Gangsta
Dir: the little homies | Jack Begert | PANAMÆRA

Kendrick Lamar ended a year of excellent To Pimp A Butterfly videos with the double-sized short film for ‘u’ and ‘For Sale?’. After a booze-drunk first half filled with spinning bottles and men in the mirror, Kendrick contrasts carnality and salvation as subliminal messages tell the true story.

David Bowie
Dir: Johan Renck

The blind prophet from ‘Blackstar’ returns in ‘Lazarus’, Bowie’s second video with Johan Renck. This time, the action is contained to the tiled room of a (mental?) hospital as Bowie writhes in bed and unspools his ravings, his silent film expressionism and age-ravaged features as alien as ever.

Pusha T feat. Kanye West, A$AP Rocky, The-Dream
Dir: Shomi Patwary

Pusha T and friends pull back the curtain (literally) on rap video filmmaking, glamorizing the G.O.O.D. life on an Old Hollywood set. There are plenty of the song’s titular vices but no, texting video vixen, Kanye isn’t on set.

‘I Am Chemistry’
Dir: New Media Limited

Would you expect a Yeasayer video to be anything but bizarre? ‘I Am Chemistry’ plays out like Second Life on an alien planet where mutations beget mutations. The animation style is creepily beautiful and (spoiler) the dance breakdown is spectacular.

Father feat. Tommy Genesis
Dir: JMP

Father and Tommy Genesis ‘Vamp’ it up in the video for this Who’s Gonna Get Fucked First? cut, taking over a mansion that is being reclaimed by nature.

Animal Collective

In the seizure-inducing video for ‘FloriDada’, Animal Collective’s latest single soundtracks a psychedelic adventure that dips dancing babies and kaleidoscopic patterns in acid and then launches them into space. Appropriately, the video will make its TV premiere during Adult Swim’s Toonami block.

‘The Conversation’
Dir: Tanner Jarman

The video for ‘The Conversation’ mirrors the song’s lowkey menace as rap upstart Chynna comes across a town destroyed by The Birds before finding sanctuary in an ancient temple.

Taylor Swift
‘Out Of The Woods’
Dir: Joseph Kahn

The divisive superstar closed 2015 with a big-budget fairy tale of a video, fusing Into The Woods with Frozen and a touch of The Grey. And if you thought pop stars had it easy, director Joseph Kahn says she suffered for her art.

Dai Burger
‘Dai 1’
Dir: Chicken

Queens upstart Dai Burger makes everything (cleaning the house, making dinner, etc) sexy in the black-and-white video for her Rinse debut, ‘Dai 1’, taunting the one who let The Best He Ever Had get away.
