The New Orleans legend was recording only a month before his death last year.
Legendary New Orleans pianist Allen Toussaint died last November at 77, but he has one final album on the way. Titled American Tunes, the release is split between two distinct recording sessions. In addition to solo piano work recorded at his home studio in 2013, the album also includes recordings from last October featuring contributions from composer Van Dyke Parks, guitarist Bill Frisell, saxophonist Charles Lloyd and more.
American Tunes isn’t out until June 10 via Nonesuch, but you can watch a trailer for the album and hear his take on Professor Longhair’s ‘Big Chief’ below. [via Jam Base]
