Iconic drum machine documentary gets simultaneous digital and theater release.

808, the film about the Roland TR-808, will see release later this year through iTunes and Apple Music alongside a US theater release.

Produced by You Know Films and Atlantic Films, a division of Atlantic Records, the documentary was executive produced by Alex Noyer, with Arthur Baker, whose own use of the drum machine helped propel it to worldwide fame and usage, as co-executive producer. Atlantic CEO Craig Kallman and the film’s director Alexander Dunn are also producers.

Speaking on the release, Kallman said: “It’s only appropriate that a film about a machine that revolutionized how music is made be seen via a service that revolutionized how music is consumed.”

The long-awaited documentary has been doing the festival rounds, showing at SXSW this year and in 2015 and in London last summer on August 08 (8/08). It features a stellar cast of 808 users including Goldie, Todd Terry, Afrika Bambaataa, A Guy Called Gerald and Lil Jon among many. [via Deadline]
